24 Aug What to look for when buying a secondhand forklift?
Depending on what you are going to use your forklift truck for, it might be a better option to buy/hire a secondhand forklift truck. So when deciding on whether to buy/hire a brand new or used truck, take a look at these guidelines we have created for you to see which option will fit your needs better.
When purchasing a forklift truck, there are many options to consider. Whether you want diesel, gas or electric? How much weight do you want it to carry? And what type of truck you require for your needs?
#1 Make sure the truck is suitable for you
Firstly, you need to make sure the truck fits all your requirements. It might be a better price to go for a secondhand forklift. However, if it does not do all that you need it to do, there is no point.
They all may seem to do the same thing, yet, each model has a different feature. Which may just have the exact model what you need. So make sure you do your research.
#2 Take it for a test drive
Like with cars, not all trucks drive the same, and some may seem more difficult to drive than others. It is important that you feel comfortable when driving as you will be using it for a long period of time, so it has to feel right for you.
#3 Check the warranty
When buying a used forklift truck, the warranty has usually expired or nearly expired. Therefore, it is crucial for you to inspect it to see what is left on the warranty and what has expired. Ensuring you know everything about the truck before purchasing it.
#4 See the certificate of thorough examination
Through the new rules and regulations, every forklift truck needs to comply with the legal requirements of a thorough examination. So make sure the forklift complies with the right rules before purchasing it.
At Permatt ForkLift Trucks, we make sure every truck has passed the thorough examination before any truck goes to a customer.
#5 check the lift mast
As this is an important aspect of the truck, you need to make sure all the functionalities are working properly. So make sure you check the guide rail and that the fork carriage gives way. When testing the truck, make sure you put weight on the lift mast. Check to see if it causes the lift mast and forks to bend.
- When testing your forklift, drive it over a clean floor. This way you will be able to see there are any oil leaks which could be costly.
- Make sure you check the colour of the exhaust fumes.
- If you are purchasing an electric truck, then make sure there is time left in the battery.
As a rule of thumb, the average FLT battery will last 1200 charges and each charge will provide on average 5 hours. So divide the clocked hours by 5 and you will have a rough idea of how much it has been used and how much charge it has got left.
