All You Need To Know About Material Handling Solutions

At Permatt, we understand that different forms of material handling solutions that may be needed for the level of work you are aiming to achieve. We’ve created a guide to materials handling. Read on to see what sort of material handling solutions you may need for the work you are carrying out.

What is Material Handling?

To put it simply, it is a process that includes movement of a short distance. This is usually inside a building, or between the transportation vehicle and the building. In essence, it’s the handling of certain materials. This is usually applicable in areas such as manufacturing, distribution, consumption and disposal.

HOW DO YOU DO MATERIAL HANDLING?

This can be done in various ways but involves the movements, protection, storage and control of materials and products. Top tips for materials handling include:

  • Boost your equipment usage for utilising time
  • Enhance the materials flow
  • Reduce manufacturing time through movement processes
  • Improve material quality but reducing damage
  • Ensure the safety of workers with minimal hazards
  • Determine an appropriate distance to cover
  • Improve efficiency as well as productivity

WHAT ARE THE TYPES OF MATERIAL HANDLING?

Materials Handling can be seen as either manual handling or automated handling.

Manual Handling

Manual handling is a process that sees physical workers transporting and moving goods. Manual handling is useful if you’re wanting to move smaller items. The worker will tend to lift, lower, fill, empty and even carry the required products. The main issue with this is with safety. Manual handling can lead to physical injuries – mainly to the lower back, shoulders and arms.

Around 500,000 of musculoskeletal cases in the UK every year are confirmed to be due to manual labour intensive jobs. To avoid any sort of injuries the recommended manual lifting weight is only 51lb, which equates to only 3.6 stone.

Automated Handling

Automated handling is the preferred way to move your products from one area to another. A lot of the time material handling equipment is only semi-automated, as a human operator is needed to drive the machine, as well as to load and unload the equipment. Although automated handling isn’t as flexible as manual handling, it does provide for a lot heavier lifting and further delivery of goods. Automated handling solutions tend to be pricer in cost, but improve efficiency, productivity and in the long run are an extremely cost-effective option.

WHAT TECHNIQUE MINIMIZES THE MATERIAL HANDLING COST?

Controlling material-handling costs increases productivity and brings a company more profit. Material handling can be greatly reduced by solutions delivering as many materials as possible directly to the production floor.

The path between materials moving through production should be ideally as short as possible. When materials are being transported, this reduces the time spent in production. By setting up a straight line for materials to travel, this can greatly reduce the manufacturing time and increase your earnings.

BENEFITS OF HANDLING SOLUTIONS

The following are the helpful benefits of using trucks in transporting materials:

  • increased production
  • Increase workplace safety
  • reduce downtime
